In the Vedas, Agni is known as the Lord of Fire and is one of the oldest and most revered gods of India. The first hymn of the Rig Veda is addressed to him. As the sacrificial fire, he is the mediator between human beings and the gods: he carries the offering upward.
In the Ageless Wisdom, Agni is the Lord of the mental plane and the symbol of the threefold nature of fire. In Alice A. Bailey's A Treatise on Cosmic Fire, fire is treated in its three aspects: electric fire, solar fire and fire by friction. Human evolution is described as the linking of these three fires.
The name Agni Yoga also comes from here. In the teaching, fire is not a force to be feared but a guide that purifies, transforms and raises consciousness. The fire of the mental plane, its purifying effect and its control are seen as the goal of the evolution of our threefold life.
Agni Yoga is a teaching introduced to the West in the 1920s by Nicholas and Helena Roerich. Its name means "the path of union with the sacred fire" in Sanskrit. Although its roots reach back to ancient Indian philosophy, it is in essence a way of life practiced in daily life, founded on conscious thought, love, creativity and spiritual energy.
